Daycare
The teacher’s Role
The teacher is an active speaker who takes care of the 2ndlanguage quality and creates a rich language environment. The teacher challenges the children verbally and enriches the 2ndlanguage learner’s vocabulary. The teacher uses the 2ndlanguage as a medium and not as an object. The teacher only uses the 2nd language with the children but with the parents, she uses the child´s/parents´mother tongue.
In Daycare, the 2ndlanguage is brought to the children through themed learning centres where the teacher participates by playing actively with the children.
The child’s role
The child is an active learner and is naturally open to new things such as a 2ndlanguage. The child learns language through playing, singing, rhyming, listening to stories, etc.
The parents´role
To support the mother tongue’s development by reading a lot and in this way enriching the mother tongue’s vocabulary. Parents should also have a positive attitude towards the 2ndlanguage. Parents should support the child’s learning of the 2nd language but should not "teach" nor "test" one’s vocabulary.
